BRAIN INJURIES

A blow or jolt to the head can result in a traumatic brain injury or “TBI” for short.  In the past few years TBIs have received a lot of media attention due to the high profile cases, including football players and other athletes that have been injured.   Any TBI can result in short- and long-term disabilities The severity of the injury may range from mild, a brief change in mental status or consciousness, to severe, an extended period of unconsciousness (30 minutes or more), prolonged amnesia after the injury, or a penetrating skull injury.

What many people do not realize is the high frequency of traumatic brain injuries that occur everyday during normal activities. The leading cause of traumatic brain injuries is from crashes involving motor vehicles, bicycles, or pedestrians.   According a to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control, An estimated 5.3 million Americans, a little more than 2 percent of the U.S. population, currently live with disabilities from traumatic brain injuries.   It is further estimated that over 1.5 million people have had a TBI, which is 8 times the number of people diagnosed with breast cancer and 34 times the number of new cases of HIV/AIDS.*

TBI can affect a person cognitively, physically and emotionally. A person might experience memory loss, lack of concentration, slowed ability to process information, seizures, double vision or even loss of vision, headaches or migraines, loss of smell or taste, speech impairments, anxiety, impulsive behavior, depression and mood swings. Some symptoms may not appear until much after the injury.

Over the years we have worked with a number of clients who have had traumatic brain injury and understand the challenges, complexities and requirements of handling these brain injury cases.  If you, or a family member, has suffered a traumatic brain injury and would like to speak with a lawyer who is experienced in handling brain injury cases, please contact us.
